Oral Submission Guide

Speaking to a Select Committee can feel daunting. This guide helps you prepare and present your kōrero with confidence.

What is an oral submission?

An oral submission is when you present your view in person (or via video call) to a parliamentary select committee, in addition to or instead of a written submission.

How to prepare

  • Know your key points — aim for 3 or fewer main ideas
  • Practice out loud beforehand
  • You will usually have 10 minutes
  • Bring notes but speak naturally
  • Committees may ask questions — answer honestly, it’s okay to say “I don’t know”
